How to Evaluate a Flavored Tea Supplier: A 7-Point Checklist

Choosing the wrong factory is the most expensive mistake in the tea business — deposits, time, and brand reputation. This checklist is written from the factory side: we know which questions a quality manufacturer answers instantly, and which ones problem factories dodge.

1. Verify certificates down to the actual documents

Don't trust website logos. Request real copies of HACCP certificates, FDA compliance documents, and Halal papers. Check expiry dates and confirm the legal entity name matches the factory you're talking to. A serious factory sends documents within a day.

2. Always sample first — and test systematically

Test the way professional factories do, in three stages: brew hot to standard spec, brew iced to simulate real menu conditions, and let it sit 30 minutes to check aroma and color stability. If you run a milk tea brand, also test with the milk and sugar ratios you'll actually sell.

3. Ask about batch consistency

The key question: "How do you ensure batch 10 tastes like batch 1?" A good answer involves systems — retention samples for every batch, sensory panels before release, per-batch COA. If the answer is just "we use good materials," be careful.

4. Check traceability

Ask whether the factory can tell you which garden your batch came from, when it was produced, and who released it. If they answer within hours, internal systems are strong — which matters enormously for claims or recalls.

5. Look for export experience to your market

A factory that ships to Thailand already knows Form E, Thai labeling, and Thai FDA documents without explanation. Ask which countries they export to regularly and for a sample Thailand export document set they've actually produced.

6. Test communication speed and quality

Send one hard technical question — ask for leaf specifications, or how to increase sweetness perception without adding sugar. A factory with a real technical team answers on-point within 24 hours. Communication that's slow before you pay only gets slower after.

7. Red flags that mean walk away

Refusing a video factory tour; prices more than 30% below market; demanding 100% deposit; no verifiable COA or certificates; and sudden bank account changes before transfer — the last is the most common fraud pattern. Only wire to a company account matching the contract name.
